THE Jiwaka provincial government expects to collect traffic fines from people breaking rules on public roads.
Provincial road inspectors will monitor the road to ensure only roadworthy vehicles use the road.
A group of 60 officers and Jiwaka Governor Dr William Tongamp attended a two-week training conducted by the Land Transport Department.
Nelson Laka, the department’s first assistant secretary, said Jiwaka was declared a “traffic district” in 2013 but was never implemented until Wednesday.
Laka said the road inspectors would be on the road with traffic police traffic to charge owners of defective vehicles, unlicensed drivers, drunk drivers and those who broke road rules.
Fines collected will go into the provincial government coffers.
Laka said the bottom line was to prevent fatal road accidents and ensure that only roadworthy vehicles used the roads.
