Jiwaka’s pioneer governor retains seat

JIWAKA’S pioneer Governor Dr William Tongamp has retained his seat for a second term and wants to complete unfinished business.
He was declared governor by the provincial returning officer, Stefan Wusik, after signing his election writ yesterday at 2.30pm.
Assistant commissioner of police, eastern division command, Nema Mondiai, administrator Michael Wandil, security personnel, counting officials and election officials witnessed the signing of writs at the Kosem Coffee factory counting centre.
Tongamp became the leader of People’s Party after party founder Sir Peter Ipatas switched to the People National Congress just before elections started.
Tongamp polled 52,541 votes to beat National Alliance Party candidate and prominent Jiwaka businessman Simon Thomas Kaiwi, on 41,045 votes.
There were 51 other candidates vying for the seat.
“We started this province with zero. And you have shown your confidence my leadership,” Tongamp told the people in his electorate.
“It’s a sweet victory and I’m very humbled by the confidence Jiwaka people have in me by giving me another five years.”
Tongamp described his win as a sweet victory which put him at peace to continue the work he had started when he was elected in 2012.
