THE Jonah Lomu Legacy Cup has received timely support from sponsors as organisers prepare to host the rugby sevens tournament aimed at junior development.
The tournament is a collaboration between the New Zealand High Commission and the Capital Rugby Union of Port Moresby.
Not only does the tournament pay homage to All Black great Lomu, who inspired young rugby players throughout the Pacific region, it also focuses on the development of junior players in PNG. New Zealand High Commissioner to PNG Tony Fautua outlined the importance of creating a strong base for the development of rugby.
“The reason why New Zealand rugby is so dominant is because of grassroots rugby and the junior development programmes that are in place. This provides the back bone for a very strong competition in New Zealand,” Fautua said.
“The ultimate aim of the JLLC is to be a catalysts to make PNG competitive in both men’s and women’s rugby on the international stage.”
CRU president Jacob Anga echoed these sentiments: “We at the CRU want to create a strong pool of junior players especially at the school level introducing young people to the game at an early age.
“Apart from just playing rugby we want to empower kids to have belief in themselves in all aspects of their development,” Anga said
Sponsors of the first edition of the JLLC are PNG Air and Fincorp.
The airline will fly in all teams from outside centres as part of its sponsorship. Fincorp chipped in K10,000 to the tournament.
The majority of the 16 men’s teams taking part in the JLLC will be from the CRU. Teams from outside of Port Moresby include Kimbe Rebels, Madang, Black Orchids and the Morobe Hammerheads.
In the women’s competition seven CRU clubs and one from the Autonomous Regional of Bougainville have been listed to play.
The tournament will be held at the renovated Bava Park from Dec 9-11.
