A GROUP of journalists toured the RD Fishing company’s operation in Madang to fully understand how the industry operates.
Pacific Islands News Association president Moses Stevens said the tour was part of a two-day Tunanomics workshop held last week.
He told representatives from the company before the tour that “we are helping the journalists understand the tuna industry, what’s really involved and all that”.
“I hope this will be the starting point of the networking and all that so we get to work together to get the people to understand better what the industry is all about and how they can benefit and how they can contribute,” he said.
The journalists boarded one of the fishing vessels to see how tuna was caught and loaded onto the carriers.
They were then shown how tuna was offloaded onto trucks from the carriers and brought to the storage facility and stored inside the cold storage facility prior to export.
The journalists visited RD Tuna Canners and discussed with the company’s managing director Pete Celso how the industry worked and where the company fitted into the industry.
The journalists were from different media organisations in the country.
The activities were facilitated by National Fisheries Authority in partnership with the Forum Fisheries Agency.
