INITIAL work on the K8 million Kokopo city hall has started, East New Britain Governor Ereman ToBaining Jr says.
He was addressing the third provincial assembly in Kokopo last Thursday
“I thank you all for your bold decision in making this historical project happen for the people,” he said.
The city hall will be built next to the ENB Saving and Loans Society building.
“After 41 years we have finally made a breakthrough to bring such a development,” he said.
ToBaining confirmed during the assembly meeting that the project was funded by the provincial service improvement programme (PSIP) and the Kokopo district service improvement programme (DSIP).
The PSIP component of K2 million allocated for the project has been paid.
He said Kokopo district was yet to release its component of K6m.
ToBaining also told the assembly that Pomio and Kokopo districts would be connected by road soon.
The national government has released K600,000 as support funding through the PSIP to start the project.
Pomio district has passed a resolution to counter fund K500,000 to support the project.
ToBaining commended Pomio MP Elias Kapavore and the authority for taking the bold step to support the life changing project.
He also assured the people that upgrading work would continue on the Kuradui-Navunaram road, the north coast road and the Rapolo road connecting Rabaul and Kokopo.
