THE Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Kundiawa General Hospital in Chimbu has been upgraded to level-six hospital – the fourth in the country.
The other three are the Mount Hagen General Hospital in Western Highlands, Angau Hospital in Lae and Nonga Hospital in Rabaul, East New Britain. Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Michael Malabag declared the hospital as the Highlands cancer treatment centre, regional multiple drug-resistance tuberculosis treatment centre and the regional physiotherapy and orthopaedic centre.
Malabag said he was grateful of the hospital’s progress.
Hospital deputy chairman John Bro said the hospital had been providing medical services at that level for four years.
“In fact, we are the only hospital providing knee and hip replacement, and spinal surgery for TB spine patients.”
Acting chief executive officer Dr Harry Poka said the challenge now would be to restructure and increase staffing.
