A lawyer and businessman from Southern Highlands was yesterday arrested and charged with the murder of his partner Regina Morove at Garden Hills, Port Moresby last month.
Felix Kange, 30, from Maia village in Pangia, was arrested at around 9am by the Criminal Investigation Division’s homicide squad after two weeks of investigations into the alleged May 14 shooting at his residence.
National Capital District-Central commander Assistant Commissioner Sylvester Kalaut told The National that it took police two weeks to investigate because they were relying on statements by only two witnesses to the incident.
“At this point in time in terms of police investigations, we are relying on the statements given by the witnesses.  We cannot fabricate evidence. Only two people witnessed the shooting, the sister of the deceased and her boyfriend, who were there. We have received statements from them that point to the fact that the shooting was accidental,” he said.
According to police, the alleged shooting occurred inside his bedroom.
It is understood an earlier charge of manslaughter was dismissed after careful considerations were made by police in relation to the circumstances surrounding the  death.
“Police have done a re-enactment of the scene, a ballistic testing to confirm the firearm that was used in the shooting. So police have proceeded to arrest and charge Kange for one count of murder,” he said.
Police confirmed that the suspect held the licence to the firearm used in the shooting.
Kange is in police custody.
A post- mortem had earlier revealed a bullet head in the back of the deceased’s skull.
