Local firm wins K25m contract

A PNG-based company, HBS (PNG) Ltd, has won a K25 million contract to upgrade a village road on Lihir Island, New Ireland.
HBS general manager Jason Zoller said the company has been involved in a number of road projects around the country.
HBS and the Lihir Civil and Construction Ltd were awarded the contract to upgrade the road over the next 14 months.
The work includes open concrete line drains, swale drains, earthworks, tar-sealing, signage and line marking and drainage works. Newcrest Mining Ltd is funding the project as part of the Integrated Benefits Package agreement between Lihir Management Company – formerly Lihir Gold Limited – and the people of Lihir Island, represented by the Lihir Mine Affected Landowner Association and the Nimamar Rural local Level Gevernment.
A ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of the project was held last month witnessed by representatives from Newcrest Lihir, local level government, provincial government, national government, landowner groups and HBS.
“HBS is excited to be involved in this project.
As a community company, we understand the importance of having good roads which people can use to access services to improve their lives,” Zoller said.
The project employed the islanders and other Papua New Guineans.
