Machines to help enforce road laws

Northern has received its first new portable heavy vehicle weighing machine to enforce road transport laws.
Governor Gary Juffa told The National that the machine which was purchased from Australia at a cost of K50,000 would be used to enforce road transport laws recently passed by the provincial executive council.
He said the law would ensure road safety was improved and road users paid for the upkeep of roads.
“With the economy in bad shape, it’s time we are extra creative and take stock of what is available what can be done and generate revenue for our people’s needs.”
Juffa said government departments, including provincial and local level governments, the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission and the province had contributed to this initiative.
“We are now working on other laws to pass to improve our revenue base and better regulate various activities in the province.”
Juffa said the provincial government passed laws last year to improve road safety and raise revenue for the province by ensuring heavy vehicle owners paid for the upkeep of the roads in Northern.
He said this effort was the first of the team’s strategies and was expected to generate a projected annual income of K5m.
The next laws passed will follow suit and discussions are currently underway with various line agencies and government departments to help the province grow its modest revenue base.
