MACLAREN continued their winning form, beating Yamaros 2-1 in the Port Moresby Super League soccer challenge at the Bisini ground yesterday.

Led by fullback-cum-striker David Taro, Toru Simoi, Basil Jofari, Fabian Bagi and Samson Poesi, the Lua Vagi-coached side made former premiers, Yamaros chase them all afternoon.

Former Port Moresby Schoolboys Excellence player and Eastern Star Jofari was the star in the midfield, controlling the match for the Popondetta team.

Jofari partnered well with Schoolboys Excellence team mate Samson Poesi to dictate play for Maclaren.

Yamaros recruited well from Besta FC and Morobe United with players like Sammy Tommy, Jacob Sabua (Besta), Peter Yang (Morobe) and Eastern Stars Patrick Aisa and John Ray but they could do little as in Jofari and Poesi shut them out.

The match started off with Ya                                   maros using their speed upfront through Patrick Aisa, Chuckston Aopi, Amon Meki to run down Maclaren defenders in Cyril Muta, Charles Paranda Leihahn Titus and Ian Peter.

Their continued raids paid off when Yamaros was awarded a free kick after Tommy Sammy was brought down on the edge of the box. Sammy sailed the ball to unmarked fullback Tony Papae to head them in front 1-0.

Maclaren never gave up and David Taro’s drive deflected off the crossbar and bounces in.

In the second half, both teams started to exchange good football. Maclaren counter-attacked from the restart and saw Toru Simoi extending their lead 2-1. In other matches yesterday, University and Rapatona registered their first wins over Momase and Mungkas.

On Saturday, Defence shot down Cosmos 2-1 while Blue Kumuls and Hard Rock fought out a 1-1 draw.

The unofficial ladder is; Maclaren 7, Defence 7, Yamaros 6, PS Roots 4, Momase 3, Blue Kumuls 3, Rapatona 3, University 3, Mungkas 1 and Hard Rock 1.
