Madang receives funds to update common roll

THE Electoral Commission office in Madang has received K390,000 to commence updating the common roll in the province.
Election manager Peter Yasaro said the delay in receiving the funds was due to the long process of opening a new account with the bank.
Yasaro said another factor causing the delay for the enrolment teams to go out and conduct the updating exercise was that the company tasked to print their cheque book leaves was yet to complete the job.
He said while waiting he had gone ahead and prepared a submission to present to Madang administration to assist with an upfront payment of K100,000 to commence the common roll update.
Yasaro also announced that unlike before, service providers in all operations in the elections would be selected by the Electoral Commission headquarters in Port Moresby.
“All service providers especially vehicles owners have to fill a tender form and the selection of vehicles is to be done in Port Moresby,” he said.
There will be no catering services provided because of the high cost involved.
The Electoral Commission made these changes because it owned K17 million to service providers in the previous election in the province.
Yasaro said polling and counting officials’ allowances would be increased so they could pay for their meals. Responding to queries of certain returning officers in the province, Yasaro said the appointments had already been gazetted and he has no power to change them.
