FISHERMEN in Madang now have a proper market to sell their catch.
Madang provincial fisheries project coordinator Henry Gumanz said the market could accommodate up to 30 vendors.
“We (Madang fisheries) are just overseeing it but the management will come under the Madang Urban local level government (MULLG),” he said.
“We’ll be providing ice for the fishermen as well.”
Gumanz said the delay in its opening was due to a dispute over the ownership of the main town market which included the fish market.
“The issues were resolved and the Madang local level government took over the running and management of this market,” he said.
“Awareness on the opening of the market was done few days in advance.
“We carried out the awareness with the Madang urban LLG.”
“But Madang Lagoon Fishing Association president Otto Merpos said the fish market was too
small.
“One of my disappointment is that this market will cater for only few people.
“Madang Lagoon has about 80 fishermen.
“Where will the rest of the fishermen go to sell their catch?
“We have our people from Bogia, Sumkar and others.
“It wouldn’t look good if we sell inside the market and have the others sell their catch outside.”
