A man has been charged with the wilful murder of one man and attempted murder of another in Manus.
Acting Manus provincial police commander Senior Inspector David Yapu said Cholai Jacob, 44, of Nauna village in Rapatona LLG, was arrested and charged with the wilful murder of Tanou Amos and attempted murder of Henry Micah.
Jacob appeared at the Lorengau district court last Thursday for mention.
The case was adjourned to the end of this month and he has been remanded at the Manus jail.
The incident occurred in the Rapatona LLG on June 8 on a small island near Tong.
The accused cut Amos and Micah on their left arms with a bush knife.
Amos died from loss of blood and Micah was rushed to Lorengau General Hospital to receive treatment.
The deceased, Micah and two others went out fishing when they encountered bad weather.
They decided to seek shelter in a small island near Tong but were attacked by the accused.
Yapu commended his officers for their quick response in arresting the person responsible for the crime.
“The situation could have gone worse if police did not promptly deal with the matter and ease tensions between the two villages,” Yapu said.
