PNG Power Ltd executive director John Mangos says he will be looking to transform the company in the same way he did when he was the chief executive officer of Digicel.

He said that yesterday after being sworn in as a board member of PPL and will move into office as executive director of the company on June 1.

“I’ve spent seven years with Digicel so that was my total time in PNG,” Mangos, originally from New Zealand, said.

“I’ve taken it from when it was recently launched to now covering 90-odd per cent of the country with Internet, phone, SMS and TV services.

“That was my history in PNG and I’m looking forward to bringing a lot of those experiences across to PNG Power.”

Asked if he was hoping to transform PPL like he transformed Digicel, Mangos said: “That’s the objective. If you look at the development goals of various timelines we have to try and meet, that has to do with power. The challenges are not so much around the generation side.

“It’s being centred on the transmission and distribution of that particular power.

“Those are the things that we are focusing on to actually get to everybody right across the country.” Mangos said he would be looking to working closely with PPL chief executive officer John Tangit on this transformation.

“I think the aim is affordable, successful, reliable power products across PNG so I’ll be working with John Tangit and the rest of the board to actually deliver on that,” he said.

“I think that’s what Papua New Guinea requires.  All it requires is a timeframe to get all that.

“That’s the plan.”

Mangos said the transformation was possible if everybody was focused. “As long as we’re all aligned with a particular goal around customer service, around reliable power, as long as everybody gets behind that ideal of PNG Power not being just a company, it’s about delivering something to the country,” he said.
