Medical team gives wheelchairs to patients

THE Callan Service in Chimbu has donated two wheelchairs to patients identified by a medical team during its rural outreach programme last month in Usino Bundi, Madang.
Steven Akia, 13, and Frenjenny Yoga, 5, are both from Pandambai and identified as cerebral palsy patients by a medical team from the Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Hospital in Kundiawa last month.
Vincent Kumura, the 2016 Digicel Men of Honour, said the institution had given the wheelchairs to the hospital’s physiotherapist Dr Sieland Banda.
He picked them up from the hospital and delivered them.
The parents of Akia and Yoga were thankful for the gifts.
Akia’s mum Cathy said: “For many years, I would get up every morning and open the window so that my son could bask from the sun rays through the window. I couldn’t bring him down (today) because he is 13 and heavy. I almost had an accident a while ago trying to carry him down the verandah.”
Kumura said he hoped the wheelchairs would at least alleviate some of the burden off the parents of the two patients.
