‘Meisoga’ screens at arts theatre

Main Stories

A LEGENDARY play telling the story of a 14-year-old girl who became matriarch of the Meisoga clan of Misima Island in Milne Bay is currently being performed at the Moresby Arts Theatre.
The play, known as “Meisoga”, is about Sine Kepu who despite her tender years had led her clan on great journeys and epic battles with other clans.
Kepu lived over a thousand years but her clan (Meisoga) still survives today on the island of Misima.
In the play, Kepu is portrayed by 17-year-old Hananiah Dickson from mix parentage of Central, Milne Bay and Western whose tiny frame belies the dynamic and powerful presence she brings to the stage.
“Meisoga explores life and culture at that time and age and what people had to do to survive,” said Dickson.
“Sine Kepu is shy and withdrawn to begin with. Once her sister dies, she finds the strength in herself to carry on her sister’s role of being the clan’s matriarch and making huge decisions for her people.”
The play is directed by Andrew Kuliniasi featuring traditional music and dance. It will run tonight, tomorrow, Saturday at 7.30pm and on Sunday at 1pm at the Moresby Arts Theatre.
