Mine observes safety week

‘Managing process safety risks’ is the theme for Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk refinery as it observes the national mining safety week in Madang this week.
This was emphasised by the refinery’s deputy general manager, Bill Hill in his address at the opening on Monday.
“When we think safety, most of us focus on the traditional occupational health and safety (OHS) models. We have in our business at Basamuk refinery another type of safety called process safety,” Hill said.
“With process safety management systems, hazards are identified and risks are mitigated or removed through defined processes.”
Hill said also expalined major difference between process safety management (PSM) and occupational healthy safety.
He said PSM is the prevention of unintentional releases of chemicals, energy or other hazardous materials within the plant processes, hence wording process safety; whereas occupational safety generally refers to classic health and safety as in protection of individual or human level protection only.
He said process and occupational health and safety are both vital and the systems overlap.
“The Basamuk process plant has the regulatory requirement to initiate and ingrain PSM into our business model and working habits,” Hill said.
The safety week awareness at Basamuk refinery has a combination of traditional OHS and PSM .
