RAMU NiCo plans to involve local schools as it did last year in the annual week-long national mining safety week programme that is set to begin next week.
The company said in statement that it was keen on involvement of the community while outlining its plan for next week.
“The country’s first nickel/cobalt mine developer considers safety as everybody’s business and is involving students despite their age and status in the society,” the company said.
“The annual event is sanctioned by the mines inspectorate of the Mineral Resources Authority and is observed by all operating mines across the country.
“Ramu NiCo will be staging a week-long event with various safety conscious activities at both its Kurumbukari mine site in Usino-Bundi district and Basamuk refinery in Rai Coast.
“Some of these activities include, Basamuk safety parade and march-by, poster competition, safety quiz, safety song competition and visits by school students to the refinery and mine site.
“Some of the highlights will be the emergency rescue drill, speeches by representatives from each technical department on safety standards and safety song competition.
“It is an opportunity for the students to understand the project and its safety standards because most of the students are locals and are potential future employees of the company.”
