A MOBILE phone operator says it is working with the National Information and Communication Technology Authority to ensure that the SIM card registration objectives are met.

Bmobile-Vodafone, in an email to The National, said the company had started registering its customers.

“Mandatory SIM (subscriber identity module) card registration was flagged to the carriers over 12 months ago.

“The national identification programme is also underway which will assist the process of customer identification too.

“We are working together with NICTA to ensure the registration objectives are met,” the company statement said.

NICTA chief executive officer Charles Punaha had said all new subscribers of Digicel, bmobile-Vodafone and Telikom would have to be registered.

Punaha said the process would take 18 months and both new and existing mobile users would have to register their SIM cards with their service providers.

He said the authority needed the cooperation of operators and the public to ensure that the registration process flowed smoothly.
