NATIONAL Alliance candidate Salio Waipo is the new Angoram MP after winning the by-election held following the death of Ludwig Schulze early this year.

Schulz had won the seat during the general election last year on a Pangu Pati ticket, defeating former MP Arthur Somare, a National Alliance Party strongman.

Waipo was declared Angoram MP by East Sepik provincial election manager Kila Ralai on Saturday night.

Waipo polled 17,478 votes while runner-up Lazarus Kenni managed 11,031. Nineteen candidates contested the by-election.

Waipo thanked his supporters and the people of Angoram for helping police and election officials ensure a successful by-election. It was run simultaneously with the local level government elections.

“I also want to thank other candidates and their supporters,” Waipo said.

“In every race, there is only one winner and I am committed to working with you all so that we bring back lost pride in Angoram.

“Whether you’ve voted for me or not, I am your member and will work with you.”

He singled out law and order as a priority and planned to give more funding to police to clean up the district and set the pace for development.
