THE National Airport Corporation says flights to Goroka are operational despite cancellations by airlines last week due to the maintenance of the runway.
Corporation acting managing director Richard Yopo told The National that several flights had been cancelled since last week at the discretion of airlines.
He accompanied Minister for Civil Aviation Steven Davies on a visit to Goroka last Saturday.
“Our hardworking team are still working on it and we have a proper schedule in place for operators to fly in and when to stop. All is in order,” Yopo said.
PNG Air is confident of resuming normal scheduled flights to the province soon. Air Niugini is adjusting its flight schedules because of the upgrading work on the runway, according to Air Link general manager Bruce Alabaster.
“We have had to cancel a small number of flights mainly due to potholes on the runway,” he said.
“This tends to be related to heavy rain overnight and to allow NAC time during daylight hours to fix these (they also haven’t been able to fix them at night due to the persistent and heavy rain).
NAC are closing Goroka airport each day at 1pm (up until Sunday) to allow them to do additional repair works.
