NCD boxers dominate trials finals

SIX Team NCD boxers advanced into the finals of their weight divisions on the first day of the PNG Amateur Boxing Union selection trials in Port Moresby yesterday.
Tournament director Mathew Aisa commended the boxers who took part, saying the trials were a real test for boxers who were preparing for the aborted PNG Games in Kimbe, West New Britain.
Aisa saluted Team NCD coach Mark Keto for getting all his boxers through to the next stage.
NCD winners that advance to second stage today include Trevor Daupa (49kg), Jamie Chan (52kg), Chris Dauna (56kg), Richard Paul (60kg), Simon Mildner (69kg) and Peter Miria (75kg).
Apart from Team NCD, Kairuku Boxing and West Mekeo had three boxers each in the men’s finals, while Mala in the Gulf province had two fighters.
Hiri and Abau boxing had one boxer each.
Boxing stalwart Dick Larry said he was pleased to see former national representative Beupu Noki back in the ring.
Noki beat Kairuku’s Camillos Kavo on points.
Larry was also impressed with NCD boxers, saying they had shown their commitment to the sport in spite of the deferral of the PNG Games.
“Their performance on the first day of the trials shows that they are hard at training and are looking forward to the PNG Games in March,” Larry said.
He said that the trials were to pick a development team to travel to Fiji.
The friendly boxing challenge will take place in Suva on October 15 as part of Fiji’s independence anniversary celebrations.
