New court house to be built near Buimo

CHIEF Justice Sir Salamo Injia says a new court house will be built near Buimo Prison in Lae.
He said this during the court-users forum organised by the National Judicial Services to discuss how best the judiciary services can be delivered efficiently.
Sir Salamo said it would be similar to the courthouse near the Bomana Prison in Port Moresby.
He said with the additional national court at Buimo, two more judges would be posted there, giving a total of four in Lae.
Sir Salamo said the courts had been having backlogs of cases.
He has approved funding to the new Buimo court house.
Buimo Prison Commander Superintendent Felix Namane said the number of prisoners on remand was higher than the number of convicted people. This leads to over-crowding.
“More than 400 prisoners currently in Buimo are remandees waiting for their court cases to be heard by the national court. Some of them have been there for almost two years,” Namane said.
He welcomed the building of a new court house which would speed up the hearing of cases and reduce the number of people on remand.
