PEOPLE of Lae and Morobe can expect a modern K30 million market built in the city with funding assistance from New Zealand.
New Zealand High Commissioner Sue Mackwell visited the market yesterday and looked at the agricultural produce sold there.
Mackwell said agriculture had always been the most important part of New Zealand’s development programme to Papua New Guinea.
“We had been here alongside PNG since independence and agriculture had been an important part our development programme all the way through,” she said.
Mackwell pledged support for Lae MP John Rosso in developing the market.
“I am supporting you in terms of establishing a great market for Lae,” she said.
“I can already see a very beautiful and well-functioning market.”
Rosso thanked Mackwell for the New Zealand government’s contribution.
“Lae is very popular for its market and it will enhance the life of the ordinary people from the districts and the city,” he said.
“The market is an essential part of the city and it is vital for  women to have a safe decent market to go to.”
The Lae market will be built on land near the old airport.
Morobe Governor Ginson Saonu said a market authority would be set up to manage its operation.
