Northern side treks to city

THE Popondetta Amateur Volleyball Association open men’s team arrived at Owers’ Corner on Monday, after trekking the Kokoda to attend the national championships in Port Moresby.
It took the 12-member team three days to trek the Kokoda Trail. They started their walk on Sunday.
President Puksie Tore said that the team had to walk due to funding constraints after appeals for sponsorship went unanswered.
“This shows that youth involvement in sports is not recognised by the community in Northern.
“Most of these players are local unemployed youths and it’s sad that no one was willing to support them to meet the return airfares to Popondetta,” he said. “We also have an open women’s and an Under-21 development squad travelling in on one-way tickets to Port Moresby on Saturday. We need help to go back”
