Oil Search reaches young readers in Fly River

OIL Search Limited has donated books and stationeries to two remote elementary schools in Fly River, Western, which face difficulties in accessing public services.
The OSL Stakeholder Engagement team donated 35 boxes of reading books and stationery to the Kaiyangabip and Swetigin community schools.
The company donated stationery along with teachers’ reference materials while the books were donated by Buk bilong Pikinini.
The Kaiyangabip and Swetigin communities are located in a very remote part of Western.
Kaiyangabip is on a hill along the banks of the Fly River and has no road access to Kiunga and Tabubil.
Kaiyangabip Community School head teacher Bob Yaki said to run a school in a remote place such as Kaiyangabip was very challenging for teachers.
“It is a day’s walk to the nearest PMV stop at Sisimakam where we catch a PMV to Kiunga or Tabubil,” Yaki said.
Yaki said because their school was new and yet to be registered.
“We do not receive subsidies from the government and this makes it very difficult for us to purchase curriculum materials, teaching resources, reading books and stationery,” Yaki said.
Yaki said they were really appreciative and thankful for the donation from Oil Search.
“These items will allow the teachers to teach well and for the students to learn well,” Yaki said.
