Old science lab receives K170,000 makeover

PORGERA gold mine operator Barrick (Niugini) Limited has assisted Porgera Secondary School with renovations to its 21-year-old science laboratory.
The laboratory was renovated for K170,000 and equipped with standard science laboratory equipment ordered from Australia.
The funding was part of the Porgera Joint Venture’s K1.1 million support for the school’s infrastructure enhancement programme after it was elevated to secondary school status last year.
Tax credit scheme superintendent Derick Kundi handed over the key to the school’s deputy principal Timothy Mendai on Friday at Paiam.
“We are aware of the requirements of the Education Department to have a proper science laboratory for students to use now that the school has been elevated to secondary status,” he said.
“So we tried to deliver this project as efficiently as possible.”
Mendai said having a proper science laboratory for grade 11 students was a real need for the school.
“Science provides the foundation for any science-oriented field, either in biology, physics or chemistry” he said.
“To have proper learning facilities is very important.
“We are very fortunate and on behalf of the school I am very thankful to PJV for this assistance.
“The upgrading of the Porgera Secondary School was funded through the tax credit scheme component totalling K8 million.”
