IT is time the Ombudsman Appointments Committee meets and appoints a third ombudsman.
The accountant ombudsman position was advertised in April and it’s been four months but the vacancy still has not been filled.
Currently, the vacancy – whether temporary or permanent – is filled by the Ombudsman Appointments Committee.
The delay in the appointment was caused by the 2017 national election, which in turn can significantly impact the work of the Ombudsman Commission.
The Ombudsman Commission consists of a chief ombudsman and two other ombudsmen who maintain the balance of power in decision-making. Having only a chief ombudsman and an ombudsman is unfair because it can result in poor decision-making which can affect the Ombudsman Commission (Section 218 of the Constitution)
