A MAN is dead while five others sustained minor injuries when the driver allegedly lost control of a vehicle, causing an accident in Northern.
Popondetta police station commander Chief Sergeant Edrick Boera told The National the driver was arrested by traffic police.
Boera said the accident happened in the early hours of Sunday near the Double Cross Bridge along the Kokoda – Popondetta highway.
Police named the diseased as Suckling Huambo from Sasembata village in the Higaturu local level government.
“The name of the driver has been withheld pending investigations,” Boera said.
He said two months earlier within the same vicinity a fatal accident involving a PMV and another vehicle cost the lives of 13 people.
He added that it was believed that the driver and the passengers were all under the influence of alcohol travelling from Koipa to Popondetta during the accident.
“The driver missed the road and drove into the bush about 50 metres which resulted in the death of one passenger and five sustained injuries,” Boera said.
Traffic police are investigating and it’s most likely the driver will be charged soon.
“It is unfortunate that only two months ago a nasty accident had occurred in that very same area where lives were lost and many were injured.
“Drink driving is a serious offence and we will not hesitate to take severe action against those found guilty,” Beora said.
