ONE man was killed and five others seriously injured in separate alcohol-related incidents at Hagen city, Western Highlands, last Friday.
Provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Martin Lakari told The National  that people celebrated independence anniversary with alcohol.
Lakari said that a utility vehicle driven by a drunkard rammed into the trailer of a big truck parked on the side of the road to off-load cargo.
He said a passenger at the back of the utility jumped off and hit his head on the tar seal and died.
The driver and two others were seriously injured and were at Hagen Hospital.
He said that in another incident, a hire vehicle allegedly driven by a drunk driver ran off the road at Rabiamul, outside Hagen city, on Friday and seriously injured two men.
Lakari said the vehicle was owned by a Western Highlander and hired by an intending candidate for the Kagua/Erave Open seat in Southern Highlands.
He said the driver of the vehicle escaped but would be track down.
“We tell people not to drink and drive but  people are not listening,” Lakari said.
