A SPECIAL police operation to remove defective buses off the roads in Lae will continue as long as there are unroadworthy vehicles, Northern assistant commissioner of Police Peter Guinness says.
Guinness urged people to understand what the police was doing and not to complain and attack police on social media.
Since the joint operation started on Tuesday, commuters had been affected because most of the buses were removed off the streets by authorities.
Some of the PMV owners had stopped their buses from making trips in fear of getting them impounded.
“We have detained over 100 buses already,” Guinness said.
“Most of them have problems such as brake and signal lights not working.
“Things have improved as some of the buses have been released to their owners after checks.
“The public must understand that what we are doing is for their own good.
“We want to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles are on the road.”
Guinness said the authorities are not stopping PMV owners from doing business, but they want to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles operate in the city roads.
He said that Lae had been used as a dumping ground for defective vehicles for a long time.
