Papua New Guinea Orchids captain Cathy Neap was the only female among 27 male trainee coaches of Southern Confederate rugby league clubs who received their International Games Coaching certificates on Monday.
IGC training coordinator Toksy Nema said PNGRFL presented IGC certificates to 51 participants including 23 from the Highlands confederate and 28 from Southern Confederate who completed the training course this year.
Nema said next year they were looking forward to double the number and more women taking a bold step forward to be part the male-dominated task of coaching rugby league games.
Neap said it had always been her dream to lift her standard in rugby league which she is so passionate about and receiving a IGC certificate was one of her many achievements in the game.
When receiving her certificate, Neap said she was happy to be part of the team who learnt a lot in coaching from former Kumul David Wesley.
Neap said she always dreamt about being a coach in one of the local clubs in Port Moresby and her dream was fulfilled when Paga Panthers owner Richard Wagambie gave her the green light to coach the under-20 side.
“I am looking forward to coach our national women’s team one fine day if I am given the opportunity.”
