THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Disaster Centre will jointly improve disaster management systems in the country through workshops.
UNDP Technical Specialist for Disaster Risk Management Khusrav Sharifov said four provinces – Chimbu, Central, Western Highlands and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville – would host the workshops.
“The workshops are part of strengthening disaster risk management in Papua New Guinea – a programme funded by the Australian government to support the Papua New Guinea government in reducing vulnerability and increase resilience to disasters,”  Sharifov said.
“PNG is prone to regular natural disasters and faces threats from a wide range of hazards including floods, cyclones, landslides, drought and earthquakes.
“The workshops will contribute to the strengthening of disaster preparedness mechanisms and response procedures at the sub-national levels in Western Highlands, Chimbu, Madang, Central and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.”
