Miss American Samoa, Matauaina Gwendolyn To’omalatai, is the new Miss Pacific Islands.
The 24-year-old was crowned on Saturday by outgoing Miss Pacific Islands Anne Dunn in Prince Charles Park, Nadi, in Fiji.
American Samoa last won the title 15 years ago, when Lupe Ane Kenape Aumavae was crowned in the Cook Islands in 2002. This is the sixth time the title has travelled to American Samoa.
To’omalatai was born in Onenoa, American Samoa, and was studying nursing at the University of Hawaii at Kapi’olani Community College before she entered the pageant. She wants to be a registered nurse specialising in the treatment and care of diabetes patients.
The results are: first runner-up, Miss Samoa; second runner-up, Miss Fiji; third runner up, Miss Cook Islands; fourth runner-up, Miss Rapa Nui; best sarong, Miss PNG, Niawali Twain; best traditional attire, Miss American Samoa; best talent, Miss Samoa; best Interview, Miss Samoa.
Special awards: Miss Internet, Miss Samoa; Miss Personality, Miss Samoa; Miss Photogenic, Miss American Samoa; National tourism award, Miss American Samoa.
