Panthers lie in wait for PRL grand final opponents

PAGA Panthers booked the first grand final spot beating arch rivals Royals 8-0 in the Port Moresby Rugby League Women’s major semifinal at the Sir John Guise Stadium on Saturday.
This match was the curtain-raiser to the PNGNRL Digicel Cup grand finals between the Lae Tigers and Agmark Gurias.
The Panthers now take a well-deserved break this week while Royals face the winner of the Souths–Butterflies elimination final.
Royals looked rusty from the start coughing up possession and misfiring on attack to virtually hand the win to the Panthers, who crossed twice.
Paga took advantage of a weakened Royals outfit, which had key players involved in last week’s national zone championships in Lae.
The coppers had Waula sisters Veronica, Freda, Solostica and Menda Ipat backing up after the national championships and in the end it proved too much for even these talented group of players.
Royals coach Sammy Rice said they would not blame the loss on the tired returning players but did call for better scheduling in order for teams with players involved in national championships to have some time to rest before playing crucial matches in their local competitions.
However, Rice gave credit to Paga saying they were the better side on the day and deserved the win.
“We will prepare to face the winner of Souths-Butterflies in the preliminary final on Saturday,” Rice said.
