FORMER PNG Hunters co-captain and goalkicker Noel Zeming is delighted to see districts in Morobe displaying passion for rugby league.
Zeming praised the establishment of the Huon Jets, a local team from Tanam in the Wampar local level government in Huon Gulf for putting a rugby 9s team taking part in the Snax 9s challenge which started on Sunday at the Lae Rugby League ground.
Most districts in Morobe were known for their passion in soccer and the former PNG Kumul was impressed to see youths turn their attention to rugby league.
“It’s great to see youths in a community which has always been dominated by soccer now taking this opportunity to showcase their potential in a new sport, rugby league,” Zeming said. “Huon Jets have now created their own sporting history by establishing their first rugby league team to represent its community to participate in a very lucrative off-season competition.
“This will be a first-time experience for most of these young players to play a game of rugby league in such an organised off-season competition where they will compete against a lot of experienced and Digicel Cup players. The team comprises of young men who have come out from illegal activities such as, brewing and consumption of illegal alcohol and consumption of marijuana.
“This team was set up not only to promote rugby league but to give a second chance to these young youths to live a better life.
“This team promotes a high standard of discipline which has transformed these youths not only to be good rugby league players but to be good citizens and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”
Zeming acknowledged major sponsors, Budget Fashion, the Onaga Family, John Orebut, chief executive officer of Markham district, Rabtrad Trading, Seeto Kui Holdings, BNF Trading in Nadzab, and Douglas David and his family.
