The family of the late Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio, pictured, says he was a person who had time for everyone.
His son Benedict Ogio and grandson Darren Yamuna said that in their tributes to him at the State funeral held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Port Moresby on Friday.
“Our late father was a simple man and lived a simple life as an educationist and a political figure,” Benedict said.
“His home was a home for anyone who needed help.”
Sir Michael leaves behind his wife Lady Esmie, five children and 17 grandchildren.
“I salute you father for being the strength to us and your grandchildren, and for being a leader of this great nation,” Benedict said. “We will miss you dearly. We value the kind advice, support, wisdom and unconditional love you have given us over the years.”
Sir Michael, from Kukurin village in Tinputz, Bougainville, was born on July 7, 1942, and trained as a school teacher before becoming a school inspector.
He began his political career in 1980 and was a member of the provincial government until 1984, serving as deputy-premier and minister for education.
Sir Michael entered national politics in 1987 as North Bougainville MP, a seat he held until 2011, when elected as governor-general.
