People’s National Congress (PNC) party candidate and Police Minister Robert Atiayafa retained his Henganofi seat this week.
Atiayafa polled 14,814 votes to beat his nearest rival Triumph Heritage Empowerment (THE) party candidate Ferao Orimyo who managed 10,239 votes.
The declaration took place on Tuesday after Atiayafa polled past the 12,000 absolute majority figure.
“I want all the politicians from Eastern Highlands to remain united to serve the interest of the people, forget different affiliations and work together,” Eastern Highlands administrator Samson Akunai said.
He compared Eastern Highlands today with the past and said rating of the province was very low now.
“We need political leaders to work together, you as a veteran politician – we need your support to move the province forward,” Akunai said.
Atiayafa thanked the people of Henganofi for re-electing him.
He promised to take up the challenge to work with other MPs in the province.
Other candidates declared in Eastern Highlands were Moriape Vereda Kavori (Lufa), Benny Allen (Unggai-Bena), Henry Ame (Goroka) and Johnson Tuke (Kainantu).
Districts expected to be declared are Obura-Wonenara, Daulo and Okapa.
