PNG to host Oceania swimming champs


THE SWIMMING fraternity in the region could see for the first time smaller countries from South East Asia taking part in the 2018 Oceania Swimming Championships in Port Moresby.
The Oceania championships will include all pool events, synchronised swimming and exhibition water polo matches.
PNG Swimming Inc president Elizabeth Wells said this following the announcement by Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko recently that PNG had won the bid to host the premier regional swimming pool event.
“Once again, new facilities that we built for the Pacific Games continue to draw interest from international sporting bodies,” Tkatchenko said.
“I thank the National Government for backing our bid and giving their guarantee of support for our host preparations and for the championships,” Wells said.
Tkatchenko said that a commitment of K300,000 has been made under the sports enhancement programme.
PNG will host the international competition for the 18 countries affiliated to Oceania Swimming Association (OSA) in pool events, open water and synchronised swimming with hopefully a demonstration of water polo at the Taurama Aquatic Centre. Countries participating include Australia, Hawaii, Guam and several countires from the South-East Asian bloc.
