PNG set-up impresses delegates

THE delegates from 15 participating teams in the upcoming 2016 Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup are impressed with the local organising committee’s preparation.
Papua New Guinea Football Association president David Chung said the delegates, including an advance Fifa team, were happy with what they saw last week.
He said they were excited about what PNG tourism would offer during the three-week long tournament in November.
Chung said he was excited to work with the tourism industry to promote the country through Fifa and the Oceania Football Confederation’s connections with the world.
Tourism Minister Tobias Kulang early this week said he was excited about PNG hosting the Fifa event, from Nov 13 to Dec 3.
“We were invited by the Sports Ministry to partner and take the lead organising the opening ceremony to showcase our diverse culture to the 15 visiting teams,” Kulang said. “This is the opportunity for Papua New Guinea to sell itself to the world.
“We, at tourism, are excited and grateful for the opportunity to conduct the opening ceremony to show our diverse culture, thanks to Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko,” he said.
Kulang said sports events such as the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup brought people together as part of sports tourism and this was an opportunity right at PNG’s doorsteps.
He said the country lost the opportunity during the Pacific Games last year.
Kulang urged major sporting bodies in the country to work with his office to sell the country through sports tourism.
The minister said visitors from around the world were coming to Port Moresby to watch football and had the opportunity to visit other places in the country too.
