PUBLIC Enterprises and State Investment Minister William Duma says police need to be supported financially as they provide security for the country.
He said during the presentation of K500,000 by the Kumul Consolidated Holdings to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary that it was not an easy task for police to provide security to people with limited resources.
Duma said the funding was to support the participation of the RPNGC in the 16th Australasia Police and Emergency Services (AP&ES) Games in Australia next month.
“The AP&ES Games is branded as the Games for the real superheroes,” he said.
“The Royal PNG Constabulary is indeed our real superheroes as we place our lives and well-being in their capable hands on a daily basis.
Duma said therefore, they needed to be assisted financially whenever there was a need.
Police Commissioner Gari Baki said the RPNGC would send a 150-member team to the AP&ES Games.
He said it was an occasion that was usually held every year between police personnel from Pacific Island countries, Australia and New Zealand.
“The participation in the games will also provide an opportunity for officers to interact with their colleagues from overseas,” he said.
Baki said the games would take place on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland from Oct 8 to 15.
“Normally, our officers find their own way to sponsor themselves to participate in the game in the past years,” he said.
He said this year they decided to seek assistance from business houses and were fortunate enough to be sponsored by the KCH.
Meanwhile, Duma said the funding would also enable RPNGC to buy much needed office equipment, such as computers, filing cabinets, tables and chairs as well as accommodation, travel and uniforms.
