Parents who neglect their children will be charged under the Lukautim Pikinini Act, New Ireland police commander John Midi says.
He made the statement after a seven-year-old girl was raped and murdered when her parents went out drinking, leaving her and two other siblings alone at home.
“She was raped and murdered on Sunday night, and her body was found on Monday morning,” Midi said.
“Her parents didn’t even know she was missing as they were out drinking.
“They only realised she was missing when her body was found.
“This is a serious case of parents neglecting their duty.
“They will be investigated and charged under the Lukautim Pikinini Act.”
Midi said parents should take their roles seriously.
“Your children depend on you to care for them and look after them, and your duty is to protect them,” he said.
“The law must now come down hard on parents who neglect their children.”
He said three suspects were in police custody.
“This is a very sad case for the province as this is the first time someone so young has been raped and murdered,” Midi said.
“I appeal to the public if you have any information or saw anything relating to this case, please come forward.”
