Polygamy cause of family, social problems: FSVU

POLYGAMY is the root cause of family and social problems in communities, according to the Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU) in Mendi, Southern Highlands.
The Mendi FSVU made 1039 referrals last year and found out that most of the problems in families were due to polygamous marriages.
Mendi FSVU officer in-charge Sergeant Naring Bongy told The National that polygamous marriage was the cause of most violence in families that led to poverty and neglect.
He said of the 1039 referrals made, 462 were referred to the provincial welfare office, 379 to family support centre, 129 to phone counseling, 30 to respective village courts, 14 to St Francis Orphanage Child Care, 13 to Mendi CID and 12 to Kumin Catholic Church counseling service.
“Of the above referrals made, polygamy was the main cause and it has a disastrous effect in our families which affects the communities, province and the nation,” Bongy said.
“There is lack of family planning, and most of the children do not enter schools and are the main ones seein floating on the streets,” he said.
