A MAN known to many as the “bus driver” defeated People’s National Congress Party candidate and Cabinet Minister Ben Poponawa to become the new MP for Tambul/Nebilyer in Western Highlands.
“Don’t call me (anymore) bus driver. Now call me Member for Tambul/Nebilyer,” he said.
Win Dakri Baki polled 32,992 votes to claim the seat.
Second was lawyer Paul Mawa on 31,270 votes.
Baki was declared on Wednesday night at the Kimininga police barracks counting centre by returning officer Philip Kansol.
It was witnessed by Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti, chairman of the provincial election steering committee Stanley Maip, security personnel and counting officials.
Baki said people called him “bus driver” but God wanted him to serve the people of Tambul/Nebilyer electorate in parliament.
“I have the heart for my people to serve them in the best way I can,” he said.
He promised to work with the governor to provide services to the people.
“My priority is to become the servant of the people of Tambul/Nebilyer,” he said.
Baki thanked the candidates and their supporters who gave him their second and third preference votes.
He said Tambul/Nebilyer was a small electorate which needed change.
