Population report focus on girls

THE 2016 state-of-the-world population report was launched with the focus on the lives of 10-year-old girls and their future in 15 years’ time.
National Planning Minister Charles Abel said, during the opening, that it was vital to make these things real for the 10-year old girl in the village.
“We continue to elevate the cause about inclusive development, the importance of population in many different aspects. But today we (are) seeing it through the perspective of a 10-year-old girl,” Abel said.
“When we reach 2030 with the development agenda and the new sustainable development goals, the 10-year-old girl will be turning 25.
“Her success otherwise when she is 25 depends very much on how we empower her to ensure that she is healthy and educated and has access to all her human rights including love and a good nurturing family environment.
“Many young girls still do not have access to completing their education.
“We need to get these things down to the village level, simple, cost effective and practical measures and some of the good examples that are happening with some of our development partners and we need to support them.”
