Port Moresby police prevented an ethnic clash between the people of Goilala, Central and Hela at Erima yesterday.
The quick response from the police prevented damage to properties but traffic was held up for some time in the morning.
Gordon police station commander Inspector Tobby Hamago said the confrontation between the two ethnic groups was the result of domestic violence.
Hamago said a man from Goilala and his Tari wife were allegedly fighting under the flyover bridge at Erima when the wife’s brothers intervened and bashed up the husband.
“The husband ran to his relatives and they retaliated,” Hamago said.
“They threw stones at each other in the middle of the road, forcing the traffic to stop.”
Hamago said there were no damage to vehicles or properties or major injuries but a few men sustained minor bruises from missiles thrown during the confrontation.
He said what started the fight was a domestic issue and police would deal with the couple.
