A POULTRY project in East Sepik aims to supply both eggs and chicken meat to generate income and boost the local economy.
Sepik Central EGG project manager Bradley Simon said the province faced a lot of competition in the supply of chicken meat.
“Supplying eggs was something missing which the management started to balance the chicken industry,” he said.
Simon said the aim of the project was to generate income through the street sales of eggs to locals. Street vendors can buy eggs from them at a reasonable price and resell them to earn an income.
“The farm also creates jobs for locals around Bainic in Maprik district, especially youths who have nothing to do,” he said.
Currently, the farm has 1100 chickens which can produce more than 1200 eggs daily.
Simon said they were working on improving the standard of the locally-made shelters with modern materials.
The farm is located at Bainic, five minutes away by road from Maprik town.
Simon said they supplied eggs to walk-in customers and businesshouses in Maprik and Wewak as well.
