NEW Ireland governor and parliamentary leader of the People’s Progress Party (PPP), Sir Julius Chan has paid tribute to veteran party stalwart and former party president, the late Alex Anisi, who died in Wewak, East Sepik, on Saturday.
He said Anisi’s death not only shocked family members but party executives and supporters who gathered in Port Moresby at the weekend for a fundraising dinner that Anisi had been expected to attend.
Guests at the dinner included Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah, Treasurer Don Poyle and other ministers.
They joined Sir Julius, party executives and supporters to observe a minute of silence in honour of Anisi and another party notable, the late Guao Zurenuoc and all Papua New Guineans who died in the sinking of the mv Rabaul Queen.
In a letter of condolence to the family, Sir Julius said Anisi was a strong leader who left a great legacy of devotion and love for his family and commitment and integrity to the PPP, which he served as president for two parliamentary terms.
He said Anisi’s devotion to family and his stamina in enduring party politics and challenges proved his deep dedication to serve his country through the visions and policies of the People’s Progress Party.
The late Anisi was a former premier of the East Sepik.
He resigned the party presidency at the party convention in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, last year to contest the national election.
