FULFILLING traditional obligations is a norm in Papua New Guinea culture as Health Minister Michael Malabag experienced over the weekend.
Malabag, who comes from a multi-cultural background, was on the receiving hand when Motu-Koita chairman Opao Udia and his clan paid him K30,000  plus garden foodstuff in a small kukudava ceremony for his daughter Emily at Tatana village on Saturday.
Kukudava in Motuan culture is minor pre-bride-price ceremony where the groom gives some money and food to the bride’s clan to show that they are planning to marry which would be followed by the major bride price ceremony.
Malabag in return bought a pig plus some traditional food to share with his to-be son-law’s family.
He said it was a normal traditional obligation he had to meet for his daughter, Emily.
