Prison requesting funds

BUIMO Prison commander Supt Felix Namane has called on the Morobe government (MPG) to assist the prison with funding so that it can carry out its work effectively.
He made this call yesterday as the prison continues to experience overcrowding at its male cellblocks.
Namane said any responsible government would want to support prison facilities operating in its province.
He said the prison looked after human beings and needed to receive adequate financial support to carry out its important task of rehabilitating prisoners.
“Right now we are given funding on an ad hoc basis by the Correctional Services headquarters in Port Moresby,” Namane said.
“But I would like to see the provincial government also assist us with some funding because the prison is located in Morobe.
“I hear that the provincial government is funding the police force but what about Buimo?
“Once the police arrest and charge people, where will all these people go to? They will end up in Buimo.”
Namane said it was important that more and better prison facilities were built to cater for the large number of prisoners at Buimo.
He said the prison not only caters for prisoners of Morobe origin but inmates from all over the country.
